he dusted off his Dad’s archtop guitar and fell in love yet again. He developed a deep understanding of the fretboard and, after winning a competition at age 15, made guitar his primary focus. Venues included local clubs like Cowboys (in Kennesaw) but a highlight came in ‘96 when he performed Jazz for a fundraising event at Chastain Amphitheatre. A 1996 Paralympics volunteer, Nick’s recognition soon extended beyond music as he received the Hadassah Chapter’s Chesed Award and Nathan Tanenbaum Memorial “for exemplifying outstanding character.” As a senior at Dunwoody High, Nick’s love of music was well known. He had played trombone in every DHS symphonic band, 4 Honor Bands, marched, was Drum Major, and completed 4 years with the DeKalb Youth Symphony. He led the DHS Jazz Ensemble from behind the keyboard while writing and arranging their charts, winning him the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, U.S. Marine Corps “Semper Fidelis” Award, and Coca-Cola’s Fine Arts Award. While attending the University of Georgia, Nick played in the Basketball Band scholarship program and the Redcoat Marching Band, performed with the Trombone Choir and studied classical guitar under Dr. Sutherland. He taught piano for an Athens housing project’s after-school program, fine-tuning his approach to pedagogue. Students followed. Nick also studied Jazz with Steve Dancz and kept a weekly Blues gig with his own trio, Blue Ruby. After Athens, Nick moved to Charlottesville, VA with the band Sun Domingo. He'd performed nearly every genre on stage or in studios but felt something missing. Four months on tour in New England honed his songwriting and he returned to Atlanta to record Ripple. Now with an LP under his belt and a void filled, Nick continues to perform and record, defining himself as an artist. His guitar playing has satiated clubs, Weddings, conventions and orchestra pits in 16 States; see the 1/04/06 issue of The DeKalb Neighbor. |
